Coronation Street viewers have voiced their surprise after Bethany Platt confirmed her pregnancy to her mother, Sarah Platt, in scenes that aired this week. The revelation came shortly after Sarah was acquitted of the murder of Theo Silverton.
Sarah's Trial and Acquittal
Sarah had spent months on remand after being charged with the killing of Theo, who was revealed as the abuser of her best friend Todd Grimshaw. Flashback scenes in June showed Theo abusing Todd, and his body was discovered by Betsy Swain on the night of her mother Lisa Swain's wedding to Carla Connor.
Sarah kept quiet during the murder investigation but eventually confessed to Todd and her then-partner, DC Kit Green. She was arrested and later charged, having admitted to DS Lisa Connor-Swain that the killing was in self-defence.
Her trial took place last week, and on Monday (October 19), the jury delivered a not guilty verdict after deliberating. Sarah returned home, unaware that her daughter Bethany was pregnant.
Bethany's Pregnancy Reveal
In Tuesday's (October 20) episode, Bethany revealed her pregnancy during a hospital visit after being pushed over by Maria Windass in the Bistro and hurting her wrist. The casual disclosure took viewers by surprise, as they expected a bigger reaction, knowing that Sarah's ex, Kit, is the father following a one-night stand with Bethany while she was in prison.
In Wednesday's (October 21) episode, Sarah jumped to the conclusion that Ryan Connor is the father, but viewers know the truth. There has been confusion over whether Bethany will continue with the pregnancy, after previously planning to visit an abortion clinic.
