Coronation Street revisited one of its most harrowing stories as Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) reflected on his experience of being in an abusive relationship, while attempting to help Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) ahead of Sarah Platt's (Tina O'Brien) murder trial.
Yesterday, the Platt family arrived at court for Sarah's trial. Earlier this year, she killed Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), and the jury must decide whether she acted in self-defence or intentionally murdered him.
DS Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) took the stand first, admitting that Sarah hiding the truth about Theo's death for weeks wasn't normal behaviour for someone who acted in self-defence. Lisa told the truth but, in doing so, she didn't help Sarah.
Danielle's testimony and courtroom chaos
Next up was Danielle (Natalie Anderson), Theo's ex-partner. While she confirmed to the jury that her marriage featured arguments, Danielle stated that Theo was never physically violent and believed he would never hurt a woman.
Hearing comments about Theo that weren't true, and listening to the suggestion that he and Todd 'traded blows' in their relationship, pushed Sarah into defensive mode. Her comments caused chaos in the courtroom, leaving the judge with no choice but to pause the proceedings.
In the pub that evening, David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) told Todd that all hope was resting on him. Todd knew he had to head to court today but couldn't bring himself to do so. On the cobbles, he was found by Tyrone, who knew where he needed to be.
Tyrone's reflection on Kirsty
In the funeral parlour, Tyrone admitted that he's spent time recently reflecting on the abusive relationship he was in with partner Kirsty. Played by Natalie Gumede, Kirsty arrived in 2011. She worked as a police officer and quickly became Ty's new love interest. After losing her job, Kirsty began working at the factory. The loss of her career saw Kirsty experience violent outbursts, rooted in a history of being abused by her own father.
Tyrone was subjected to a campaign of physical and psychological abuse by Kirsty. When she discovered that Ty was having an affair with Fiz Stape (Jennie McAlpine), Kirsty falsely accused him of pushing her down the stairs. Tyrone went on trial, but a guilt-ridden Kirsty broke down and admitted to her own crimes. She was sent to prison in April 2013. In 2021, Tyrone learnt that Kirsty had been found dead in her flat after a bleed on her brain.
Tyrone's advice and Todd's testimony
During Tyrone's chat with Todd, he told him that if he took to the stand at Sarah's trial, he will not only help himself, but he will help others. Todd wasn't sure what he meant, but Tyrone pointed out that no-one knows what the people in the courtroom are going through, let alone those who will read the reports. A victim of domestic abuse bravely recalling what he went through may prompt someone else to speak up.
Todd knew that Tyrone was right. In the courtroom, Todd was questioned about his relationship with Theo and Sarah. He was incredibly nervous and stumbled over his words multiple times. The trial hasn't ended yet, and it's not really clear if what Todd said today will help Sarah. David isn't convinced.
