Charlotte Riley Leads New BBC Drama 'Babies'
Actress Charlotte Riley is set to captivate audiences in a gripping new BBC drama titled Babies. The six-part series, which begins airing tonight, explores the emotional journey of a couple facing pregnancy loss. Riley, 44, plays Amanda, a character who brings depth to this tender yet urgent love story.
A Story of Resilience and Heartbreak
The drama follows Lisa, portrayed by Siobhan Cullen, and Stephen, played by Paapa Essiedu, as they navigate the challenges of multiple miscarriages. Despite unimaginable grief, their bond is highlighted through humour, warmth, and unwavering commitment. Jack Bannon co-stars as Dave, adding another layer to the narrative as his character tests compatibility with Riley's Amanda.
Charlotte Riley is no stranger to powerful roles, having previously starred as Catherine Earnshaw in ITV's adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Her career also includes appearances in films like London Has Fallen and series such as The Peripheral and Trying.
Meeting Tom Hardy on Set
While her professional achievements are notable, Riley's personal life often draws attention due to her marriage to acclaimed actor Tom Hardy. The couple met in 2008 while filming Wuthering Heights, where Hardy played Heathcliff opposite Riley's Catherine.
In a recent interview with The Times, Riley recalled their first encounter, noting Hardy made her a strong cup of tea and shared that his mother was northern. She described him as his "cheeky-chappy self," dispelling myths about his Method acting reputation.
Family Life Away from the Spotlight
After starring together, Hardy proposed, and they married in 2014 in an intimate ceremony in France. The couple shares two children: a daughter born in 2015 and a son in 2019. Riley is also step-mum to Hardy's son Louis from a previous relationship.
Speaking about parenting, Riley emphasised keeping their family life private. She plans to work near home while her children are young and noted that she and Hardy avoid working simultaneously to simplify their lives. Their home is filled with art materials, and they enjoy painting together as a family.
Tom Hardy has also reflected on fatherhood, telling Hello! Magazine in 2015 that it gave him purpose and made him more mindful of his actions. He expressed pride in being a father and supporting his children.
