Channel 5 Revives 'The Accused' with UK Focus

A gripping true crime documentary series is set to make a dramatic return to Channel 5 after a nine-year hiatus, this time focusing exclusively on devastating British cases. The programme, titled The Accused: Guilty or Innocent?, originally aired in 2017 and covered eye-opening stories based in the United States.

Revival with a New Direction

The show ran for seven series comprising more than 60 episodes, but its reboot will take a different approach. Produced by Brinkworth Productions, the new episodes will spotlight UK cases, delving into the lives of people facing the most terrifying moments as they navigate the justice system.

The Accused features subjects with no prior criminal record as they fight against serious accusations amid the full force of the legal system. The series is currently in production and will be filmed over an 18-month period, following select cases through the courts with unprecedented access to both the accused and their legal defence teams.

Malcolm Brinkworth, CEO of Brinkworth Productions, added: 'Brinkworth made two pioneering 90-minute specials of The Accused in the UK for 5. Hugely acclaimed, the series went on to become a major success in the United States and throughout the world.'

He noted that A&E Networks commissioned multiple series, with the show becoming the number one true crime programme on US cable network. 'Now we're excited to bring the series back to its original home on 5 with this multipart commission,' Brinkworth stated.

Netflix's Competing True Crime Success

Meanwhile, Netflix has left viewers emotionally overwhelmed with a new instalment of its true crime documentary Homicide, which fans have dubbed among the streamer's best ever. Created by Dick Wolf, the mind behind Law & Order, the series first premiered in March 2024, initially focusing on New York before expanding to Los Angeles in its second season.

The third season returns to New York, investigating notorious murder cases that have rocked the American city. The series follows chilling murders from the perspectives of police detectives and the loved ones of victims, diving into complex investigations linked to high-profile killings.

Viewer Reactions and Episode Highlights

The Netflix synopsis describes it as an investigative true crime documentary where homicide detectives recount their most challenging cases. The first episode of the new series focuses on Joey Comunale, a 26-year-old who disappeared in 2016 after a weekend in the city with friends, leading detectives down a twisting murder case.

Another episode examines the harrowing events of 9/11, featuring a NYPD first responder opening up about the weight of the tragedy. Fans have flooded social media with praise, with one writing on X: 'Homicide: New York on Netflix is so good.'

Another viewer agreed: 'Was watching Homicide New York s2, great series. Most affecting is the last episode on 9/11,' while a third noted: 'As fascinating and addictive as the first two seasons.'

A fourth fan shared: 'Just finished the latest 5 eps and one of my fav true crime shows. Just well put together. Ep 5 had me bawling. Seeing how real and raw their emotions are to this day from the events on 9/11... Heartbreaking.'

Others expressed how traumatic the content was, with one reacting: 'Wait this episode may be too traumatic for me to continue to watch. I cant,' regarding the 9/11 episode. A sixth concluded: 'I’m late to the game with Homicide New York, what a captivating season! Every episode left me in shock. The story telling, the details and the personal accounts from the families, survivors and detectives was amazing!'

Both series showcase the enduring appeal of true crime documentaries, with Channel 5's revival bringing a British perspective to the genre while Netflix continues to captivate global audiences with its detailed, emotional storytelling.
