The acclaimed documentary series One Born Every Minute is poised for a dramatic return to Channel 4, marking its comeback after an eight-year absence from television screens. This heartwarming and groundbreaking programme, which originally aired for 11 series between 2010 and 2018, will be revived with 12 brand-new episodes scheduled for broadcast on E4.
A Fresh Chapter for a Beloved Series
Channel 4 has officially confirmed the revival of this intimate documentary, which captures the raw and emotional experiences of childbirth within hospital maternity wards. The show was previously axed in 2018 due to declining viewership, with audience numbers dropping to around 600,000 from a peak of five million at its launch. However, the network now sees an opportunity to reconnect with a new generation of viewers.
Documenting Modern Maternity Care
The new episodes will delve into the evolving landscape of family structures and the significant advancements in maternity care that have emerged since the show's cancellation. Additionally, the series will highlight the genuine challenges faced by NHS personnel in 2026, providing an unfiltered look at the healthcare system.
Filming is set to commence later this year, utilising the same fixed-rig camera technique that made the original series so compelling. This approach allows for the capture of spontaneous and unpredictable moments in birthing rooms, offering audiences an authentic glimpse into the transformative journey of childbirth.
Historical Success and Global Influence
During its initial run, One Born Every Minute achieved remarkable success, including winning a BAFTA for best factual series. The programme was filmed primarily at Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton, where over 40 cameras documented approximately 6,000 births annually, creating a significant cultural buzz. For its final two series in 2017 and 2018, production moved to Birmingham Women’s Hospital in Edgbaston.
The show's format proved so influential that it was replicated worldwide, with similar versions launching in the United States, Australia, Israel, and various European countries. Its impact even extended to popular culture, as evidenced by a 2013 spoof performed by the cast of BBC’s Call The Midwife for Comic Relief.
Executive Perspectives on the Revival
Vivienne Molokwu, Senior Commissioning Editor for Reality & Entertainment and Commissioning Lead at E4, expressed enthusiasm for the series' return. "Nearly 10 years on, we feel very privileged to once again follow the journey that parents embark on as they welcome their babies to the world," she stated. "We know the roller coaster of emotions that this period brings is something that will really resonate with the E4 audience, and we cannot wait for our viewers to see how the digital age has reshaped how families navigate this stage of life."
Will Rowson, Co-Creative Director at Dragonfly TV, the production company behind the series, echoed this sentiment. "There's such affection for One Born Every Minute," he remarked. "In the years it's been away so much around pregnancy and maternity care has changed, making this an exciting moment to reimagine the show."
Availability and Anticipation
Upon its release, One Born Every Minute will be available to stream on Channel 4's digital platforms, ensuring accessibility for a broad audience. The revival promises to uphold the original structure, focusing on labour and delivery while adapting to contemporary societal shifts, thereby offering a poignant and updated narrative for today's viewers.
