In a heartwarming television event, the beloved automotive restoration series Car SOS is set to premiere its 14th season with a special guest appearance by Dame Joanna Lumley. The acclaimed actress joins hosts Tim Shaw and Fuzz Townshend for what is described as a "show-stopping reunion" in the opening episode, scheduled to air on March 12 on National Geographic.
A Sentimental Journey with a Classic Car
The episode centres on the meticulous restoration of a 1950s Austin-Healey Frogeye Sprite, a vehicle steeped in personal history for its owner, John. This little roadster was the site where John's love story with his late partner began over six decades ago, making it a cherished relic of his past. However, family commitments forced John to sideline the car, which has been languishing in his garage for more than fifty years.
A Daunting Restoration Challenge
The Car SOS team faces one of their most formidable tasks yet. The Frogeye Sprite is in dire condition, with extensive rust compromising the bodywork, a seized engine, a gearbox requiring complete rebuilding, and an interior that is literally falling apart. Compounding the difficulty, John has misplaced his garage keys, potentially necessitating the urgent intervention of a locksmith to access the vehicle.
Tim Shaw and Fuzz Townshend are committed to preserving as many original, authentic parts as possible during the restoration. Their mission is to secretly extract the car from its long-term storage and completely refurbish it in time for a dramatic and emotional reveal at a picturesque English vineyard.
Dame Joanna Lumley's Pivotal Role
Dame Joanna Lumley plays a crucial part in this poignant narrative. She will assist in the surprise handover of the fully restored Austin-Healey to its overwhelmed owner. The episode's synopsis teases the high stakes, asking: "Can the Car SOS team complete the daring restoration in time for an emotional reveal at an English vineyard, with surprise help from Dame Joanna Lumley? The clock is ticking."
An Ambitious Fourteenth Season
This Frogeye Sprite project is just the beginning of an exceptionally ambitious season for Car SOS. The upcoming series will also feature a rare Lamborghini Silhouette restoration with support from the Italian marque itself, the programme's first-ever motorcycle rebuild for a former sub-postmaster affected by the Horizon scandal, and the construction of a therapeutic vehicle from a Rover P4 aimed at supporting men's mental health.
Host Tim Shaw expressed the heightened pressure of the new season, stating, "This season is on another level. The cars are rarer, the builds are tougher, and the responsibility to get it right for the families is enormous. When you hear firsthand what some of them have been through, you'll understand why these reveals mean everything."
Co-host Fuzz Townshend echoed this sentiment, adding, "Every year we think we've taken on our toughest restoration, and every year the bar somehow is set higher."
Car SOS premieres with this special episode on Wednesday, March 12 on National Geographic. New episodes will continue to air every Thursday at 8pm, promising more extraordinary vehicle transformations and heartfelt stories.
