The Dubliner bar in Boston, Massachusetts, a key headquarters for the Tartan Army during the World Cup, shut its doors on the day of England's match against Ghana, citing staff exhaustion after a week of heavy partying with Scottish supporters.
Pub Closes Amid England Match Day
A note on the door read: "Closed today to give staff a break." The pub also posted on Instagram: "We’ve decided to give our staff a day off and are closing today, they’ve worked incredibly hard over the last two weeks and deserve it." In a dig at England's game, they added: "Thankfully there’s nothing happening in Boston today so we will be back tomorrow. #noscotlandnoparty."
Scottish Fans Welcomed in Boston
For over a week, the Dubliner was filled with Scottish fans who drank the pub dry, with locals embracing them. Boston's mayor even announced a sister city partnership with Glasgow after residents begged the Tartan Army not to move on to Miami. According to reports, the Scots have since moved on to Miami, where they were given the "go ahead" from the Miami Commissioner to place traffic cones on statues.
Social Media Reaction
Social media users found the closure amusing. One wrote: "Love my petty besties at the Dubliner for being closed during the England match. And bravo for giving the staff a day of rest!" Another added: "Lovely, hard-working people who were hopefully tipped generously by the tartan army!! Thanks for all your hospitality." A third commented: "This is so funny bro."
England fans hit back, with one writing: "Spend your money somewhere else. Their loss." Another chimed in: "Clearly don't like money."
Other Bars Shut Early
Other bars across Boston also closed early yesterday, just hours after England drew 0-0 with Ghana. An England fan on TikTok filmed police on Union Street outside Hennessy’s Bar, saying: "They've shut all the pubs down here at 10pm. Big queues and you can't drink on the street." He added: "So the update in Boston is all the places are closed now. Police or councillors said shut down at 10 so people are just being pushed out to other areas."
Scottish fans found this amusing, with comments like: "Try singing Flower of Scotland," "We were in there partying till 5am," and "We were on the streets drinking until 3am too."
