Ade Edmondson and Zoe Wanamaker's Pact: No Sex Scenes in Bergerac Reboot
Ade Edmondson has disclosed a unique agreement with his Bergerac co-star Zoe Wanamaker to steer clear of intimate sex scenes in the hit show's revival. The actor, aged 69, joins the cast for the second series of the reboot, taking on the role of Nigel Morton, who becomes the love interest of Charlie Hungerford, portrayed by Wanamaker, 76.
A Romantic Alternative to Intimacy
Ahead of the series' release later this week, Edmondson explained their decision to favour a more romantic storyline over bedroom intimacy. In an interview with The Mirror, he shared, 'My favourite scene was our bed scene. Not much of a scene really, just a shot of us in bed.' He elaborated, 'We both thought it was unnecessary to see people our age getting intimate, so we determined to hold hands while sleeping instead. We knew we'd got it right when we heard the director go, "Awww".'
Praise for Co-Star and Craft
Edmondson, who is married to Jennifer Saunders, also humorously noted, 'I'm sure Zoe wouldn't mind me letting everyone know that she is as mad as a box of frogs.' He added, 'Some of the best people are. It's always very educational to work with people who are so good at their craft. I learnt a lot.'
Background on Bergerac's Legacy and Revival
The original Bergerac series, which starred John Nettles as detective Jim Bergerac, was a major success when it aired on the BBC from 1981 to 1991. Viewers were captivated by its sub-plots involving Bergerac's love life and the stunning Jersey locations. The show was renewed in 2025, with Damien Molony stepping into the role of the detective.
The stellar cast for the reboot includes Robert Gilbert reprising his role as Barney Crozier, alongside Lesley Sharp, Charles Dale, Turlough Convery, Georgina Rich, and Jonathan Aris.
Plot Details for the New Series
A synopsis for the upcoming series reveals that Jim Bergerac has tentatively started dating again, encouraged by Kim, played by Chloe Sweetlove, though he still feels a void since his wife's death. Privately, he holds little hope of meeting someone special until Nicola, portrayed by Camilla Beeput, a visitor to the island, enters his life.
However, just as things look promising, Bergerac is drawn into a new investigation when a groom is found murdered in his hotel room during a wedding. The victim's final words may hold the key to uncovering the killer's identity, adding a thrilling twist to the romantic and detective elements of the show.
The second series of the Bergerac reboot is set to premiere on Thursday on U&Drama, promising a blend of mystery, romance, and the iconic Jersey backdrop that fans have long cherished.
