The BBC has confirmed that DIY SOS has been rested, with Nick Knowles revealing the show is "shelved, not ended," and the broadcaster has announced a new spin-off series to replace it.
The long-running programme aired its final episode on Tuesday night (October 27), bringing together Nick, his team, and volunteers for one last project helping a family in need. The decision to pause the show comes after 27 years on air.
Nick Knowles on the show's future
Before the concluding instalment, Nick took to Instagram to address supporters, acknowledging it was "quite an emotional one" before sharing what lies ahead. He stated: "We have been told that the programme has been shelved, not ended. But I have asked the question, will it ever come back in the form it is, where it builds whole houses for people or builds these great, big, hospices and charity places, and I've been told, no, if it comes back in the future, it'll be smaller, more cost-effective."
The presenter expressed gratitude to fans for their support over the years, describing the final instalment as the "end of an era." He added, "I thought I'd be okay with that, but actually it's a little bit emotional. I'd like to thank everybody that we've worked with for the last 26 years. If you volunteered, if you're a tradesperson, if you're a supplier, and you supplied all the stuff for free, love you all. It's been an honour to work with you all. We've loved every minute of it."
MasterChef takes the Tuesday slot
With the programme coming to an end, a slot has opened up in the television listings for next week. It has been announced that rather than DIY SOS, BBC audiences can tune into the opening instalment of the fresh series MasterChef: The Professionals on Tuesday evening (November 3). In place of the makeover programme, viewers will witness Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti commence their hunt for the next cooking sensation.
Addressing the programme's hiatus, a BBC spokesperson stated: "In light of the BBC's savings challenges, we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore. DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will revisit successes from the show's past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year."
DIY SOS is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
