The BBC has become a laughing stock after censoring a T-shirt worn by Strictly Come Dancing contestant Bethany Antonia, prompting mockery on Saturday Night Live UK.
During the VT segment of the show, the broadcaster edited out the actress's top, which read: "Protect the Dolls." Following fierce backlash, the BBC confirmed the edit, saying the move was "in line with our editorial guidelines."
BBC defends censorship decision
A BBC spokesperson said: "As is standard practice on any entertainment show on the BBC and in line with our editorial guidelines, appropriate steps are taken to reduce the inclusion of any overt branding or slogans that may be present, regardless of the wording or statement in question."
The controversy adds to a series of scandals for the show, which has also faced a humiliating drop in viewership due to its revamp.
SNL UK comedian takes aim
During the Weekend Update segment on Saturday Night Live UK, comedian Ania Magliano referenced the incident. She said: "The BBC has stressed that they're not transphobic, they just hate dolls as they're often used to demonstrate where they were touched by BBC talent."
Viewers took to social media to share their amusement. One commented: "Holy Christ, that’s good," while another remarked: "The BBC is ridiculous in so many ways these days."
Viewers react online
"SNL UK is out for everyone’s blood and I'm here for it," added a third. One fan praised: "This is like the third joke in a row from SNL UK that actually makes me laugh and atp they are just mogging the American version time and time again." A fifth exclaimed: "OH MY GOD."
The BBC should take this as a sign to pick its battles, as Strictly stars often share behind-the-scenes content directly with fans. With viewership continuing to plummet week after week, the broadcaster cannot afford to disregard fans or spark yet another Strictly scandal.
