The BBC has confirmed that its romantic crime drama Mint will be replaced next week by the critically acclaimed crime thriller The Cage, which has been described as "brilliant" and "intense" by viewers.
Mint, which has divided audiences since its premiere, airs its final two episodes tonight, Monday, May 11, at 9pm on BBC One. The series follows a Glasgow crime family in turmoil after protagonist Dylan, played by Sam Riley, abandons both his loved ones and the family business.
Taking over the Monday night primetime slot from May 18 at 9pm is The Cage, a Liverpool-set crime thriller starring Sheridan Smith (I Fought The Law) and Michael Socha (Showtrial). The series revolves around two casino employees who independently plot to rob the same safe.
The Cage has been airing on weekends, but its fifth and final episode will now air on Monday, May 18. The show has garnered widespread praise on IMDb. One fan wrote: "The series is intense from the get-go and is not at all predictable. There is enough humour to keep everyone engaged." Another added: "Was a bit wary when I saw it was set in a casino, but it turned out to be a fantastic show! My husband and I binged it and thought the twists and turns were brilliant." A third viewer commented: "This was one of the best dramas I've seen in recent years. Exciting, amusing, involving, entertaining, and ultimately moving."
Alongside Smith and Socha, The Cage features a stellar cast including Barry Sloane (Revenge), Geraldine James (Downton Abbey), and Sue Jenkins (Coronation Street).
Reaction to Mint has been mixed. Some viewers called it "hypnotic, unusual and captivating" and "one of the best shows to come out of Scotland ever." However, others labelled it "dismal," "unwatchable," and "so dire, cheap and nasty."
Mint is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
