Fans of The Great British Bake Off have been left fascinated after a former contestant shared what really goes on behind the scenes on the Channel 4 show. Alice Fevronia, who appeared in 2019, took to social media to offer followers an intriguing peek at what happens off-camera.
A packed tent and long filming days
One photograph revealed that during challenges and tasks, the central aisle is "absolutely packed." Alice explained that it is crammed with dozens of crew members, including producers, runners and camera operators, all working tirelessly to ensure everything runs smoothly and that every dramatic moment is captured on film.
The former contestant also disclosed that while bakers are permitted to practise and refine their recipes at home beforehand, they only get "one shot" once inside the tent. She noted: "You see an hour show, but it takes two whole days to film (6am - 8pm during early episodes when there are a lot of bakers)".
Judging takes hours and secrecy is key
Alice went on to reveal that the judging process alone takes several hours, with considerable downtime between each challenge. She continued: "You can't tell anyone you're on the show, so you have to get inventive as you lie to 90% of your friends, family and colleagues. I dreaded the 'how was your weekend?' question on Monday mornings."
The Bake Off contestant also noted in her caption: "So many incredible people work so hard to make the show. For example, spare a thought for the lady who does all of the washing up by hand because it would be too noisy to have dishwashers in the tent!"
Fans react to the revelations
It didn't take long for the comments to flood in, with many followers astonished by the behind-the-scenes disclosures. One person remarked, "This is soooo interesting to see and learn!!" while another wrote: "Love these sneak peeks. I've been intrigued as to how it's all filmed/baked/judged in reality! Thanks for sharing."
A further user commented: "Thank you for this, Alice! So fascinating. I loved your whole group, just the sweetest, most fun people ever." While another remarked: "I loveeee this behind-the-scenes look at the show! I've always been really curious about it!"
The Great British Bake Off continues Tuesdays on Channel 4 from 8pm.
