If you are searching for your next television obsession, look no further. Sex may sell, but stocks sell faster. Luckily, the riveting drama Industry has a firm grip on both and does not intend to let go. This BAFTA-winning series begins with four new graduates competing for a permanent position at London investment bank Pierpoint and Co. From their first day, it is anyone's game, and all four play by varying definitions of the rules.
Why You Should Watch
Do not let the dense financial jargon deter you. Even if you never understand what they are yelling about, you will be captivated. For those with financial knowledge, it is even more thrilling, but there is plenty of drama for everyone.
Sordid, sexy, and viciously smart, Industry is compulsory viewing. The main character, Harper Stern, played by Myha'la, is unlike anything seen before. She may be small, but she packs a serious punch and is not afraid to enjoy what she calls 'the kind of feminism where women can be c***s'. Harper will do anything to reach the top, and her nail-biting exploits are both supported and scorned by those around her.
Key Relationships
The warped relationship between Harper and fellow graduate Yasmin Kara-Hanani (Marisa Abela) lies at the heart of the series. Viewers spend much of the time trading off between who they hate more at any given moment.
In later seasons, the world widens from finance and trading to the class anxieties permeating British culture. This is where Kit Harington delivers a career-defining performance as Sir Henry Muck, an erratic, depressed aristocrat who hides behind hapless business plans to avoid facing his lack of personal connections.
Everyone in Industry is out to get something from someone else. Woven through this ruthless pursuit of self-interest is a web of fascinating interpersonal relationships, tied together with whip-smart dialogue and occasional laugh-out-loud moments hidden amidst the horror.
With a 91% average rating on Rotten Tomatoes across four seasons, it is not just critics singing its praises. This is some of the best television since Succession. Although no date has been set for the fifth and final season, fans are eagerly awaiting its release.
Industry is available to stream on BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, or Apple TV.
