Adolescence Sweeps BAFTA TV Awards with Eleven Nominations
The Netflix drama Adolescence has emerged as a dominant force in this year's BAFTA Television Awards, amassing an impressive eleven nominations across key categories. This includes nods for Limited Drama and Leading Actor, highlighting the series' critical acclaim and widespread recognition.
Since its debut on Netflix in March last year, Adolescence has consistently captivated awards season, having previously secured nine Primetime Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, and a Critics Choice Award. Now, it stands poised to add more accolades as the BAFTAs return in May, with stars such as Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, and Christine Tremarco all in contention for awards.
Star-Studded Competition and Categories
Created by actor Stephen Graham, 52, and writer Jack Thorne, the series delves into the gripping story of British teenager Jamie Miller, who is convicted of murdering a female classmate after being influenced by online manosphere communities. In the Leading Actor category, Stephen Graham will compete against notable contenders including Colin Firth for Lockerbie, Matt Smith for The Death of Bunny Monro, and Taron Egerton for Smoke.
Meanwhile, the Supporting Actor category features a compelling face-off between co-stars Ashley Walters, 43, and Owen Cooper, 16. They are joined by other nominees such as Paddy Considine for Mobland, Rafael Mathe for The Death of Bunny Munro, Joshua McGuire for The Gold, and Fehinti Balogun for Down Cemetery Road.
Additional Nominations and Industry Impact
Erin Doherty, 33, is nominated for Leading Actress, marking her first nomination in this category. She will compete against Aimee Lou Wood from The White Lotus, co-star Christine Tremarco, Chyna McQueen from Get Millie Black, Emilia Jones from Task, and Rose Ayling-Ellis from Reunion.
Stephen Graham could also achieve success with his performance in the Disney+ series A Thousand Blows, created by Steven Knight, which has garnered seven nominations, including Drama Series. Overall, Netflix has secured 28 nominations, but the BBC leads with 73 nominations, five of which are for The Celebrity Traitors.
The Celebrity Traitors, which became the highest-rated show on British TV last year, sees host Claudia Winkleman nominated for Best Entertainment Programme. Prime Video's Last One Laughing, recently renewed for a second series, will compete against the all-stars version of The Traitors, with star Bob Mortimer up for Best Entertainment Performance.
Awards Ceremony Details and Executive Insights
The BAFTA Television Awards are scheduled to take place on May 10 at London's Southbank Centre Royal Festival Hall, hosted by comedian Greg Davies. BAFTA CEO Jane Millchip commented, '2025 has been an exceptional year for television, reflected in 124 nominated programmes that highlight the strength and originality of British storytelling. From powerful documentaries and standout comedy to homegrown drama and the international series that captured global attention, this year’s nominees demonstrate a medium at its creative peak.'
Earlier this year, Adolescence also led nominations at the Royal Television Society Awards, dominating six categories. Actor Owen Cooper made history by winning Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series at the Actor Awards, formerly known as the SAG Awards. At 16, he became the youngest individual winner in the ceremony's history, surpassing Kate Winslet's previous record set at age 20.
Cooper's triumph continues a streak of groundbreaking awards for Adolescence, which he filmed at age 14. Last September, aged 15, he became the youngest male actor ever to win a Primetime Emmy for a supporting role in a limited series or anthology, expressing that the honor 'means so much to me' and to his family.
