Adam Scott Nearly Quit Acting After Losing 'Six Feet Under' Role to Michael C. Hall

Adam Scott has revealed that losing the role of David Fisher in HBO's Six Feet Under to Michael C. Hall nearly made him give up acting. Speaking on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, the Parks and Recreation star said the experience was so painful that he considered walking away from the profession.

Scott explained that he and Hall both tested for the part, which ultimately went to Hall. 'It was the one where I was like, I might stop doing this. I think that it's time for me to read the tea leaves and walk away,' Scott recalled. He described the show, which aired from 2001 to 2005, as 'the show' that 'eclipsed all other shows' at the time.

Despite the initial disappointment, Scott later appeared as a guest star in Season 2, playing a boyfriend of Hall's character. He described the experience as 'fun' and praised Hall as 'lovely'. Reflecting on the rejection, Scott said, 'It's good that I didn't get it because it wouldn't be nearly as good if I had done it because he was perfect and incredible.'

The Severance star added that such setbacks are important for growth: 'It's also important that you have those experiences.' Hall went on to earn an Emmy nomination for his role in the acclaimed drama series.
