Rhythm Paradise Groove, known as Rhythm Heaven Groove in North America, is the latest entry in the beloved rhythm game series, released for the Nintendo Switch after an 11-year hiatus. The game offers a joyful collection of vibrant, bite-sized rhythm challenges where players follow audio cues to perform actions like catching vegetables in mid-air, practicing dance choreographies, or communicating with an alien. Each mini-game is a micro-cacophony with its own rules, designed to test reflexes and timing.
Dozens of Fresh Challenges and Multiplayer Returns
The new selection includes dozens upon dozens of fresh challenges, some paying homage to classic mini-games from previous titles. Multiplayer makes a comeback, allowing up to four players to compete, revealing whose reflexes and sense of rhythm are truly sharp. Side modes and unlockable activities enrich the experience, with Beatspell standing out as an RPG-lite mode where players press button patterns tied to the beat to cast spells. This mode is properly fleshed out and could stand as its own independent adventure.
Charm and Compromises
While the series retains its unmistakable charm, the bizarro WarioWare, DS-era spirit of the originals is somewhat missing. Most levels play it safe in terms of presentation or gimmicks, and the game feels easier overall, with only a handful of stages requiring multiple retries. Latency and precision issues persist, particularly when playing on a TV. A warning in Beatspell recommends switching to handheld for a better experience, a sentiment that applies to most games. Many players may feel they pressed a button at the right time only for the game not to register it, which becomes frustrating when aiming for perfect scores.
An Old Friend Returns
Despite these issues, the mini-games in Rhythm Paradise Groove do not reach the same cohesive highs as series classics like Ringside or Hole in One, nor does the package reinvent the wheel like some contemporaries. However, after 11 years, it feels like reuniting with an old friend who has remained untroubled by time. Even if the tunes are familiar, players will be eager to hear new stories. Rhythm Paradise Groove is available now for £33.99/$39.99.
