Midnight Mass: A must-watch for Haunting of Hill House fans

Netflix's Midnight Mass, created by Mike Flanagan, is being recommended as a must-watch for fans of The Haunting of Hill House. The seven-episode series, released in 2021, is described as a self-contained story that builds an unsettling atmosphere rather than relying on jump scares.

A recommendation from a TV fan

Craig, a TikTok creator from Surrey who discusses TV and film on his social media accounts, highlighted the series in a video. He said: "If you're looking for your next series to binge-watch this Halloween, this series on Netflix is a must-watch. It comes from Mike Flanagan, who you may know from The Haunting of Hill House, and if you want a horror that's going to really get under your skin, you need to check this one out."

Craig explained the premise: "It follows a man called Riley Flynn, who returns to his isolated hometown after spending time in prison. But things start to change when a mysterious new priest, Father Paul, arrives in the community. And suddenly, people start experiencing what they believe to be miracles."

What makes Midnight Mass stand out

Craig praised the show's approach to horror: "What makes Midnight Mass so great to watch is it doesn't rely on cheap jump scares to frighten you. Instead, it builds this incredibly unsettling atmosphere, slowly revealing its secrets until you're so invested into what's happening on that island."

He also commended the performances, particularly Hamish Linklater as Father Paul, and the writing, which explores themes like faith, guilt, addiction, and redemption. "When the horror kicks in, it gets absolutely terrifying. It's dark, disturbing, emotional, and there are some things in this that will stay with you for a very long time," he added.

Critical and audience reception

Midnight Mass holds an 87% critic rating and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers who commented on Craig's video shared positive reactions, with one saying "Really good show. Very unusual," another adding "Really good series with a superb ending," and a third calling it "Best series ever."
