Australian band Gang of Youths have released their first new music in four years, the single 'Things Take Time', following a period of reflection and personal change for frontman Dave Le'aupepe.
A New Sound and a New Attitude
The song, out now, marks a departure from their previous maximalist rock style, embracing a simpler pop structure. Le'aupepe, now 34, says the band's mindset has shifted. 'The best possible way to be is to not give a fuck,' he said.
This new approach is evident in the track, which was inspired by a joke from bandmate Jung Kim about writing a song about plants. Le'aupepe explained it's about 'things growing and dying, but also what happens if somebody's just overwhelmingly OK.'
Recording and Reception
Recorded in Tom Hobden's backyard studio in London, the song was a deliberate exercise in restraint. Hobden noted, 'It was a conscious decision not to be so grandiose and actually let Dave's voice carry the song.'
Le'aupepe, who has struggled with self-consciousness about his voice, found the process liberating. He also revealed he created a 300-track playlist for the band, featuring influences like Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits, but also Perry Como and Glen Campbell.
Looking Ahead
The band performed three new songs at their recent Sydney Opera House shows, which sold out quickly. Le'aupepe told the audience, 'You'll have to come back and see us next year,' hinting at more new material to come.
'Things Take Time' is available now.
