The Irish crime drama Kin has returned to streaming platforms, much to the delight of viewers who feared the series had been shelved after its initial 2021 premiere. The BBC production, which became one of Ireland's most-watched programmes, is now available in full on both BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
Created by Peter McKenna and Ciaran Donnelly, Kin is set and filmed in Dublin, centring on a fictional family embroiled in a brutal gangland war. Originally broadcast on RTÉ One, the show attracted interest from both Netflix and the BBC, leading to a second series commission. The cast includes Aidan Gillen and Ciarán Hinds as opposing gang leaders Frank Kinsella and Eamon Cunningham, alongside Charlie Cox, Clare Dunne and Emmett J. Scanlan.
Audiences have been effusive in their praise, with the series earning a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One reviewer described it as "tense, riveting drama with strong performances", while another called it "the best series I have seen". Comparisons to Peaky Blinders have been frequent, with one fan writing: "Absolutely brilliant, one of the best I've seen up there with Peaky Blinders, the acting throughout is superb and the storyline is gripping."
The show has also served as a springboard for cast members, with Sam Keeley later appearing in HBO's Task and Scanlan securing a role in Netflix's Fool Me Once. Following its second series in 2023, speculation has mounted about a potential third instalment, with reports suggesting filming with the full cast is due to commence in Dublin this July. However, no official announcement has been made, with an RTE spokesperson stating: "If and when there's something to announce, we will be delighted to do so."
In the meantime, all 16 episodes of Kin remain available to stream, offering viewers a chance to catch up on the acclaimed drama that has captured audiences on both sides of the Irish Sea.
