William and Kate's Smile-First Strategy Sets Them Apart from Harry and Meghan
William and Kate's Smile-First Strategy Sets Them Apart

Prince William and Princess Kate are taking a much different approach to the spotlight than Harry and Meghan, says one royal commentator. While the latter's return to the UK has been shrouded in drama since it happened back in August, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor continues to struggle with the law, while Earl Charles Spencer brings old wounds to light with the release of his Diana book.

Being directly in the line of succession, one might assume that William would be at the centre of a lot of this drama. Instead, the Prince and Princess of Wales have managed to stay above it all.

A Smile-First Approach

According to the Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers, the senior royals are doing so with a smile. On this week’s episode of Pod Save the King, Myers revealed that William and Kate are keeping things light, with smily public engagements that make no mention of the personal beef between them and the Sussexes, or any other drama surrounding royal figures.

"What William and Catherine are doing is not only putting their best foot forward, but actually enjoying the job. It doesn’t need to be so heavy all the time," Myers said.

"They’re not going to speak about Harry and Meghan, they’re not going to speak about Andrew’s court case, they just want to get on with life and have a bit of fun along the way."

Letting Appearances Do the Talking

During the conversation, The Mirror’s deputy royal editor Jennifer Newton echoed this and said that there is no need for the Prince and Princess of Wales to issue formal statements about drama that they are not involved with.

"And is this not the best way to say something without saying anything at all?" she said. "Just getting on with it and having fun. They don’t have to put out any statements when these appearances do all the talking."

Prince William is remaining positive during his engagements, despite the bitter rift that is reportedly still there between him and his younger brother. William is reportedly furious that Harry is producing a documentary about their late mother, Princess Diana.

Staying Above the Fray

It is understood that William was offered opportunities to do similar projects but turned them all down. Meanwhile, it's understood that the brothers have not seen each other since Harry returned to the UK late this summer.

Despite this, neither William nor Kate has addressed this in public. Recently, the couple went to Northern Ireland on a visit aimed at combatting homelessness. They travelled to Belfast to visit two projects connected with the future king’s Homewards initiative, which aims to make homelessness "rare, brief and unrepeated", and their visit has been praised by royal fans online.
