Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly at odds over the next stage of their eldest son Prince George's education, as the 12-year-old prepares to leave Lambrook School this summer. Sources indicate that the couple have had difficult conversations about the future, with William keen to prepare George for royal life while Kate fears he may miss out on a normal childhood.
An insider told heat magazine: 'William is very focused on making sure George's path to the throne is as smooth as possible, while Kate is desperately trying to keep hold of his old life for as long as she can.' The source added that at home, George remains 'just George' who enjoys being outside and playing with his siblings, and Kate holds onto that tightly.
During a recent radio appearance, William revealed that George had been trying out boarding school life by staying overnight at Lambrook. Joking to his other children, he said: 'Charlotte and Louis – because George was boarding last night – make sure you're on time, please, make sure you're not fighting over who listens to what this morning.'
Speculation about George's next school includes Eton College, William's alma mater, and Oundle School in Northamptonshire. William has spoken about the duty of being king, saying at age 21: 'It's not a question of wanting to be, it's something I was born into and it's my duty.' In contrast, Kate has emphasised giving her children a 'happy home' inspired by her own grandmother.
The source added: 'Kate wants him climbing trees, kicking a football around, and spending summers being a normal kid. She worries that once the royal machine starts, there's no going back. But William is constantly thinking ahead.' Plans for George's summer reportedly include charity work and outdoor challenges like the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
