According to analysis by QR Code Generator, vintage baby girl names from a century ago are seeing a resurgence in the UK, with Lily emerging as the most popular. The study compared Office of National Statistics (ONS) data from 1924 with the latest figures for 2023.
Lily was the favourite, with 2,290 baby girls given the name in 2023. Ivy came second with 1,997, and Florence third with 1,899, showing a strong preference for floral and nature-themed names.
However, not all vintage names have fared well. Phyllis, Pauline and Gertrude have become extinct, with no babies receiving any of these names in 2023. Doreen, Muriel and Brenda are also rare, with only three baby girls each given these names last year.
The trend reflects parents' desire for unique and uncommon names, turning to older monikers that have fallen out of favour. The data highlights which nearly century-old names are gaining popularity and which have faded away.
