Princess Diana made light-hearted jokes about sex and the use of antidepressants in personal letters to the late actor Terence Stamp, which are to be auctioned next month. The letters reveal the intimate topics the two close friends discussed freely.
In a letter dated October 1991, Diana thanked Stamp for a recent luncheon, writing: 'Three cheers for Prozac, not the American variety I hasten to add!' She added a month later that she was not having 'Prozac withdrawals, as yet!'.
In another invitation to lunch, she sent a humorous card reading: 'Why did God invent sex?' with the answer joking: 'So that married people do something at least twice a year.' The comment was made while she was still married to King Charles, before their 1996 divorce.
The letters are owned by Stamp's estate and will be sold by Bonhams from June 15 in the Sound & Cinema sale, expected to fetch between £1,500 and £2,000. Other items from Stamp's collection, including scripts, costumes and photographs, will also feature.
Diana, who died in 1997, was known for her charity work and close relationships with those she met. The letters provide a personal insight into her life during her marriage.
