Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer has paid a poignant nine-word tribute to Kevin Keegan after the Toon legend passed away at the age of 75. Shearer, who turned down Manchester United to sign for the Magpies in 1996 for a club record £15 million, posted on X: 'My Hero. My manager. My friend. Sleep easy boss.'
Shearer's Decision to Join Newcastle
Shearer has often spoken about choosing Newcastle over Manchester United. In 2015, he recalled: 'Manchester United was the probable move. My wife and I had even picked out a house. I then got a call from Kevin Keegan and we set up a meeting at David Platt's mother-in-law's house in Cheshire. On that same day, in that same house, I would also meet Fergie. Fergie came in and the first thing he said was, "Am I first or has Keegan got to you?" I told him I had already spoken with Keegan and he said, "That's me f***ed then."'
Keegan's Final Public Appearance
Keegan made a final public appearance in May on Tyneside, where he said: 'I want to say goodbye. I didn’t get the chance when I left (Newcastle United) last time.'
