Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York, is marking her 67th birthday today, but her life has changed dramatically over the past year following revelations about her ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
Once seen as the Royal Family's greatest survivor, weathering storms and facing financial ruin, the former Duchess now faces a reality where some scandals cannot be overcome. The lies, deception, and crude comments about her own daughter that surfaced in documents related to the convicted paedophile have given a darker look at the woman who has maintained ties to the Royal Family for over five decades.
Ever since the email in which she called Epstein "a supreme friend" emerged in September 2025, Ms Ferguson has been invisible. Her social media sites have been neglected, countless charities have removed her from their lists of patrons, her various business ventures have closed, and her once-beloved Sarah's Trust charity has shut down.
What Has Sarah Ferguson Lost?
The floodgates opened when a 2011 email from the former Duchess was published in September 2025, in which she called Epstein a "supreme friend" – something she called a "gigantic error of judgment" when this detail emerged. A spokesperson soon said the email was to counter a threat Epstein had made to sue her for defamation.
More historical emails followed, the scale of which became clear when the US Department of Justice released hundreds of files linked to several of Epstein's known associates. It was instantly clear, however, that being named in the files did not immediately suggest wrongdoing.
After Sarah publicly distanced herself from the sex offender in an interview, she would go on to write in another email to him: "I know you feel hellaciously let down by me. You have always been a steadfast, generous and supreme friend to me and my family."
The coarsest comment she made came in March 2010 and focused on her youngest daughter, Princess Eugenie, 35, then 19. After Epstein emailed Sarah to ask about a trip to New York, simply saying, "NY?" Sarah bluntly replied: "Not sure yet. Just waiting for Eugenie to come back from a sha**ing weekend!!" While no other details are shared, it is thought she is referring to a holiday Eugenie took with her now-husband, Jack Brooksbank.
Four months later, she complained to Epstein that she'd been "hung out to dry" and that "no woman has ever left the Royal Family with her head" shortly after she had been caught out by the infamous "fake sheikh" sting, which saw her filmed offering to sell access to her ex-husband for £500,000.
In the months since, Sarah lost the Duchess of York title she retained and had to move out of Royal Lodge in Windsor, the home that she shared with her ex-husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, despite their 1996 divorce. She has been jetting around the world, with reported stays in Qatar, the Swiss Alps and Ireland.
Impact on Royal Connections and Charity Work
One month after the scandal, in October 2025, King Charles made the surprising announcement that he was stripping his younger brother of his remaining royal titles, a move that directly affected his former wife. Andrew and Sarah's two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, were unaffected by their uncle's decision.
At the same time, it was confirmed that the former couple would be evicted from Royal Lodge in Windsor, with Andrew moving to an at-the-time undisclosed property on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, funded by King Charles. It was made clear that no provisions were made for the former Duchess. While she was pictured only once staying at the £15 million Swiss chalet owned by her former boyfriend, the late Paddy McNally, she managed to fly entirely under the radar despite reports that she has also been visiting places like Qatar and Ireland.
Her efforts to slowly rebuild her relationship with members of the Royal Family burst into flames when the level of the scandal became clear. Ever since King Charles's accession, her slow reintroduction into the Firm looked quite assured, as she was joining the family for Christmas and Easter, as she had before her divorce.
Her position as a charity representative was impacted too, as every organisation – from Prevent Breast Cancer to Teenage Cancer Trust – fell like dominoes and removed her as their patron.
Does She Have Any Hope of a Comeback?
Previous decades have seen Sarah emerge from scandals with alarming ease, including the infamous "toe sucking" photograph in France and a cash-for-access sting by the Fake Sheikh.
PR expert Chad Teixeira told the Express that while the door "is barely open", the former Duchess may not have given up on the hope of a future return. "The reality is that public tolerance for anything that appears tone-deaf or dismissive on this subject is extremely low," he says. "Any attempt to reappear quickly risks reopening wounds rather than moving the narrative on."
"Silence, in this moment, is not weakness, and in fact a strategy. When a story is this emotionally charged, the best thing she can do is let public anger cool, and the worst thing she could do is try to talk her way through it. The public does not want explanations, and it certainly does not want justifications."
And while there is often talk that she will put her pen to paper once more and tell her side of the story for an eye-watering sum, a spokesperson for Sarah Ferguson previously told the Express that this is not the case. They explained that Sarah "has no plans to write any tell-all memoir" and is "unaware of any multi-million-dollar book deal".
Her Plans for the Future
With charities having wiped their associations with the former Duchess and her once-promising reconnection to the Royal Family now in tatters, what does she have left?
It is thought that she still has strong relationships with her two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, as she attended the christening of her granddaughter, Athena Mapelli Mozzi, and reportedly met up with her youngest daughter in Qatar. And, most importantly of all, she is a grandmother five times over, six if you include her step-grandson, Christopher Woolf 'Wolfie' Mapelli Mozzi.
Following the birth of her latest granddaughter in August, Sarah is now a grandmother to Princess Eugenie's children, August, Ernest and Adelaide Brooksbank, as well as Princess Beatrice's daughters, Sienna and Athena Mapelli Mozzi. While she has spent much of the last year out of the UK, Sarah is reportedly moving back, although not back in with her ex-husband in Norfolk. It has been reported that she has rented a six-bedroom gated property in an as-of-yet undisclosed area in the Home Counties.
