Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has reportedly agreed to finance the urgent repairs needed at Prince Andrew's Royal Lodge mansion, which is estimated to cost £2 million. The Duke of York faces eviction if he cannot secure the funds for the renovations, which include addressing damp issues and roof repairs throughout the 30-room property.
A friend of the Duchess revealed that Ferguson, who remains close to her ex-husband and stays at the Windsor residence when in the UK, sees this as an opportunity to support Andrew after he stood by her during her own past difficulties. The friend stated: 'It is true Sarah has a vested interest in Andrew continuing to live at Royal Lodge, as it is where she stays when in the UK. But it is more than that, this is about Andrew's pride.'
The Mirror exclusively reported that Andrew was granted a 'stay of execution' to remain at the home indefinitely, provided he can raise the £2 million needed for repairs. He has already paid over £200,000 for roof repairs over the summer, described as an 'interim payment'.
King Charles had offered Andrew the smaller Frogmore Cottage, previously home to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, but Andrew refused, insisting he would not leave the home he has leased since 2003. The King also cut Andrew's £250,000 annual allowance. A private meeting between the brothers at Balmoral in late August reportedly led to a 'cooling of relations'.
Earlier this year, Ferguson spoke about supporting Andrew, saying the late Queen was 'relieved' she could help her 'poor son' during his tumultuous period. A source close to the Duchess noted that their finances remain separate, but she has always sought to contribute where possible.
