Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has described her early days living in Buckingham Palace after marrying Prince Andrew in 1986. In her autobiography 'My Story', she wrote that despite the palace having over 600 rooms, her life was confined to fewer than six.
Ferguson moved into Prince Andrew's former bachelor quarters in the East Wing. She noted that the palace's atmosphere was 'an absolute time warp' and that her new home had 'drab wallpaper'. However, she felt secure for the first time, no longer worrying about phone bills.
The Duchess described Prince Andrew as her 'knight' who saved her from unhappiness. She wrote that in those early days, she could not imagine being separated from him, but he soon pursued his Navy career, leading to long periods apart.
Ferguson's reflections come as reports suggest she may return to live at Buckingham Palace. The couple divorced in 1996 but have remained close.
