Princess Kate Hosts Star-Studded Christmas Carol Service at Westminster Abbey
Royal Family's Festive Carol Service Draws 1,600 Guests

The Prince and Princess of Wales, accompanied by their three children, led a celebration of festive spirit and community at Westminster Abbey this week. The royal couple hosted their annual "Together at Christmas" carol service, welcoming a congregation of 1,600 guests from all walks of life.

A Royal Tradition of Togetherness

Before the service commenced, the Princess of Wales personally greeted performers, celebrities, and readers who were taking part. Among those she met were acclaimed actress Kate Winslet and singer Katie Melua. She also shared a charming moment with Dan Smith, the lead singer of the band Bastille, revealing that the event has become a cherished tradition for her family. "They're really excited, it's become such a tradition," she said of her children's anticipation.

The historic setting of Westminster Abbey held special significance, as it was the very location where the Prince and Princess of Wales married in 2011. The service aimed to celebrate "love in all its forms" and honour individuals from across the United Kingdom who have dedicated time to volunteering, led community initiatives, or offered vital support to others.

Family Moments and the Connection Tree

Prince George, aged 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and seven-year-old Prince Louis arrived at the Abbey with their father, the Prince of Wales, and were warmly greeted by their mother. A poignant moment occurred outside the Abbey doors, where the family paused at a specially erected "Connection Tree."

Adorned with paper chains bearing the names of attendees, the tree served as a powerful symbol of unity. The young princes and princess added their own names to the chains, a gesture mirrored by other members of the congregation, emphasising the importance of community bonds during the festive season.

Nationwide Celebrations of Community Spirit

The event in London is just the centrepiece of a wider national celebration. Inspired by the Abbey service, 15 community carol services are scheduled to take place across the UK, spreading the same message of love and togetherness.

These local events will be held in locations including the Coronation Street Visitor Centre in Greater Manchester, an arts centre in Newbury, Berkshire, and a community farm in Gwent. They will be hosted by lord-lieutenants and supported by The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales.

The regions set to host these community services are: Armagh, Berkshire, Derbyshire, Dumfries, Dyfed, East Riding, Gwent, Greater Manchester, Isle of Wight, Lanarkshire, Nottinghamshire, Renfrewshire & Ayrshire, Suffolk, Wiltshire, and Worcestershire.

The Westminster Abbey carol service was recorded for television and is set to be broadcast to the nation. Viewers can watch it on ITV1 and ITVX on Christmas Eve, with a repeat scheduled for Christmas Day, allowing families across the country to share in the festive message.
