Roger Hunt's 1966 World Cup shirt up for auction at £8,000

A shirt worn by Roger Hunt during England's 1966 World Cup campaign is estimated to fetch up to £8,000 when it goes under the hammer at Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers in Devizes, Wiltshire, on Saturday.

Match-Worn Shirt from France Game

The long-sleeved white shirt was worn by Hunt against France in a group game on July 20, 1966, where he scored both goals in a 2-0 victory. Hunt played in every game of the tournament and scored three times, helping England progress from their group. England went on to beat West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium to lift the World Cup.

Hunt's Career and Legacy

Hunt spent the majority of his career with Liverpool, earning 34 England caps and scoring 18 international goals. He died in 2021 at the age of 83. The signed shirt comes with exceptional provenance, including copies of photographs showing Hunt with the vendor and her family.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: "In this most important of World Cup weeks where England could end 60 years of hurt, we are delighted to be offering Roger Hunt's match-used shirt from the France group game where he scored twice." He added: "With exceptional provenance it is a truly tangible link to the last time England won the World Cup."

Personal Connection to Devizes

Hunt spent much of his National Service time in the Devizes area, even playing for Devizes Town during that period. He lodged with the vendor's family most weekends, forming a lifelong friendship. The shirt was given to the vendor's father after the World Cup. The lot also includes photographs of Hunt with the vendor as a child, with her father, and in the vendor's garden in later years.
