Ricky Gervais has shared a rare insight into his relationship with long-term partner Jane Fallon during an appearance on ITV's This Morning. The comedian, who has been with the bestselling author since 1982 after meeting at University College London, was asked about his relationship status while promoting his new Netflix animated series, Alley Cats.
'Married, really'
Although the couple have never married, Ricky insisted they are "married, really" despite never officially tying the knot. The pair have been together for more than 40 years and have long spoken about their decision not to marry. Jane previously explained that neither of them had ever felt it was necessary.
Speaking to the Daily Mail in 2018, Jane revealed that marriage had simply never been important to them. She said: "We're not married because neither of us are fussed. I think if one of us really cared then we would probably do it. But it's not really been anything that either of us have ever really needed."
Ideal evening
The topic resurfaced during Ricky's appearance on This Morning on Friday (August 7), where he joined presenters Paddy McGuinness and Josie Gibson. While discussing his role as the voice of Gus in Alley Cats, Ricky admitted he has plenty in common with the feline character, particularly when it comes to avoiding social situations.
Describing his ideal evening, he said: "It's my favourite thing! It's couch, me, girlfriend, cat, wine, Netflix." He joked that the only thing that persuades him to leave the house is work, adding: "Honestly, just to get up and go on tour, I've already been paid so I've got to do it."
Relationship question
Josie then picked up on his use of the word "girlfriend" and asked whether he and Jane had ever married. Ricky replied: "Yeah. Yeah - we do everything. We are married, really. But just not in the eyes of God." Josie simply responded: "Right, okay," before moving the conversation on.
The couple have also been open about their decision not to have children, with The Office star Ricky previously saying they are happy with the life they have built together. This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
