Ballon d'Or 2026 chaos as fans break barriers in London

Harry Kane was crowned the 2025 Ballon d'Or winner at a chaotic ceremony in London, becoming the first English player to claim the award in 25 years, as fans broke through security barriers to catch a glimpse of football's biggest stars.

Fans Overpower Security at Red Carpet

Masses flocked to football's most prestigious awards ceremony, held in London this year, hoping to catch sight of the sport's elite stars. However, anticipation swiftly descended into chaos as supporters attempted to force their way into the Ballon d'Or ceremony.

Clips shared on social media captured fans attempting to burst through barriers while security personnel worked to hold them back. This follows England hosting the prestigious award for the first time in its 70-year existence. London was selected to stage this year's landmark ceremony as a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, who claimed the first-ever award in 1956.

Julien Froment, a journalist for Radio France, posted on X: "The barrier leading to the red carpet is really struggling to hold, a lot of people want to get close to see the Ballon d'or nominees."

Officers Restore Order

He also said that officers stepped in to restore "back to calm". Meanwhile, other supporters clambered onto containers lining the streets and bounced about enthusiastically hoping to spot players. It remains unknown whether anyone was arrested.

Kane's Historic Win

England captain Harry Kane secured the men's award following an outstanding season with German giants Bayern Munich. Kane has become the first English footballer to claim the Ballon d'Or in 25 years after being named the planet's finest player.

The 33-year-old was amongst the frontrunners to secure the trophy for the first time in his career after a remarkable campaign with Bayern Munich where he netted 61 goals across 51 appearances last season. He played a crucial role in helping the club clinch yet another Bundesliga title, alongside a German cup triumph.

Yamal Makes History

Kane maintained that impressive form for England at the World Cup, netting six goals for the Three Lions as they secured third place under Thomas Tuchel.

Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal made history by becoming the first player ever to receive the Kopa Trophy for the world's best under-21 player at the Ballon d'Or.
