The Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte travelled on the Elizabeth Line for a low-key weekend trip to central London on Saturday, October 10, surprising fellow passengers.
Video footage showed Catherine and Charlotte riding the line, which opened in May 2022 and was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, before getting off at Tottenham Court Road station. Onlookers described the encounter as "surreal," noting the pair blended in with the crowd despite a "low-key security detail."
An Ordinary Day Out
First reported by The Sun, the outing was described as a "very ordinary girls' day out," with the pair sitting with members of the public and not "hassled." Kensington Palace declined to comment on the private family excursion.
Tottenham Court Road places the pair within walking distance of London's West End, major shopping districts and the Royal Ballet and Opera, venues they have visited together previously given their shared love for ballet.
The 'Middleton Model'
The low-profile outing highlights the Prince and Princess of Wales' ongoing commitment to giving their three children - Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight - a grounded upbringing away from palace walls. Royal expert Duncan Larcombe previously said Prince William has deliberately embraced the "Middleton model" for their parenting approach.
"Although there are some similarities, George is being raised in a very different way to Prince William. William has based his children's upbringing on the Middleton model - three children, affluent, but hardworking parents and lots of love in the house," Mr Larcombe explained.
Grounded Upbringing
Psychotherapist Lucy Beresford echoed this in the documentary Prince George: How To Make a Monarch, saying: "I think William and Kate, making sure that George, Charlotte, and Louis have these normalising experiences where they just interact with really normal people, actually gives them that grounded sense that they are human beings like the rest of us."
Catherine's determination to give her children a grounded upbringing is drawn from her own childhood in Berkshire alongside siblings Pippa and James. Raised by former flight attendant Carole and flight dispatcher Michael Middleton, the trio grew up in a hardworking household where they helped run the family's Party Pieces business. Carole and Michael prioritised family life, rarely missing a weekend sports match while instilling a love of the outdoors and simple country pleasures that now underpins the Prince and Princess of Wales' daily routine.
