Princess Eugenie has revealed the name of her newborn daughter: Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. The baby was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on August 3, weighing 6lb 9oz.
Tribute to Queen Elizabeth II and Family
In an Instagram post, Eugenie explained the name honours “three people we love and admire past and present,” including Adelaide’s late great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II. The name also reflects both English and Portuguese history – “two places we love and call home.”
Adelaide is the third child for Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank, joining brothers August, five, and Ernest, three, known as Augie and Ernie.
Inspiration Behind the Name
The name Adelaide is understood to have been inspired by Queen Adelaide (1792-1849), wife of King William IV, as well as Maria Adelaide of Portugal. Annina was inspired by a personal connection to Eugenie and Jack, which has not been revealed.
Rare Overseas Birth
Adelaide’s birth is a rare occasion where a member of the British royal family has been born overseas, as Eugenie and her husband have a home and other connections in Portugal.
Eugenie wrote on Instagram, sharing new photos of Adelaide, including one of the princess and Ernie holding the baby’s hand: “Two weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we’ve had the most special, cosy and love-filled time.”
She added: “We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her great-grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home. Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers.”
