Princess Eugenie names baby daughter Adelaide in Queen tribute

Princess Eugenie has revealed the name of her newborn daughter: Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. In an Instagram post, she explained the name pays tribute to her late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, as well as other family members.

The King's niece and her husband Jack Brooksbank, who already have two sons, welcomed their third child last week. The baby was born on Monday, 3rd August 2026, at 6.20pm at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, weighing 6 pounds 9 ounces, according to a Buckingham Palace statement.

A Name Honouring Family and Heritage

In her Instagram post, Eugenie wrote: "2 weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we've had the most special, cosy and love-filled time."

She added: "We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home. Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers."

The baby, who is not an HRH and will not receive a royal title, is 15th in line to the throne, behind brothers August, five, and Ernest, three. Her great uncle Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, moves down to 16th place. She is also the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the third born since her death in 2022.

Birth Announced with Joy

Eugenie announced her daughter's birth last Tuesday with an Instagram photo of the baby clutching her father's finger, wearing a pink onesie with angel wings and a hat. The post read: "Jack and I are so excited to announce Baby Girl Brooksbank!! We are beyond in love with our girlie" followed by five heart emojis.

A Buckingham Palace statement said: "Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, born on Monday, 3rd August 2026, at 6.20pm, at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal." It added: "Their Majesties the King and Queen and other members of The Royal Family were delighted to be informed of the news."

The new arrival is the fifth grandchild of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, after the birth of Princess Beatrice's second child Athena Mapelli Mozzi in January last year. There was no reference to Eugenie's parents in her post or in the palace statement. Ferguson, who has not spoken publicly about her new granddaughter, has been out of the public eye in recent months.

Born in Portugal

The birth is a rare occasion where a member of the Royal Family has been born overseas, as Eugenie and Jack have a home and connections in Portugal. However, Adelaide is not automatically eligible for Portuguese citizenship, as the country does not grant birthright citizenship to children of foreign national parents unless one parent has been resident for five years at the time of birth.

The family began spending time in Portugal in 2022, when Jack started working for a property tycoon with a development on the CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club, south of Lisbon. He had previously been the European brand director of Casamigos Tequila, owned by George Clooney.

Eugenie announced her third pregnancy in early May, with a Buckingham Palace statement saying the King was 'delighted'. The princess posted on Instagram: "Baby Brooksbank due 2026!" with red heart emojis. The palace said: "Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are very pleased to announce that they are expecting their third child together, due this summer."

The birth came weeks after Eugenie and her sister Beatrice attended the wedding of their cousin Peter Phillips, following revelations about their parents' association with Jeffrey Epstein. They had previously stayed away from Easter Sunday and Royal Ascot. The National Audit Office published a report into royal residential arrangements, revealing the King foots the bill for the sisters' accommodation in royal palaces despite them being non-working royals.
