Princess Eugenie has given birth to a baby daughter, but this time the joyous event took place in Portugal, not the UK. The daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, along with her husband Jack Brooksbank, announced the news on Tuesday evening. Their new baby was born on Monday at a hospital in Lisbon, weighing 6lb 9oz, and both mother and child are said to be doing well.
Why Portugal?
It is rare for a member of the Royal Family to be born overseas, but Eugenie and Jack have a home and other connections in Portugal. Since 2022, the couple has been splitting their time between the UK and Portugal, after Jack accepted a job as a marketing executive with Discovery Land Company in Portugal. The company operates luxurious resorts worldwide, including the CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club in Comporta, where the couple resides.
Life in Portugal
Eugenie has spoken openly about living in Portugal. In 2023, she told the Table Manners podcast: “This is why Portugal is the dream because I can go to the supermarket in my exercise gear and my hair piled on my head and not mind. Not care. No one cares.” A year later, in 2024, she revealed to Hello! magazine that her sons love living there: “They love swimming. The sea in Portugal is a little bit rougher. So we've got our feet in, but Augie is a fish. He literally loves it and we have whales and dolphins all across the walls.”
While in the UK, the family uses the three-bedroom Ivy Cottage at Kensington Palace.
