Prince William has revealed a humorous anecdote about a backstage selfie with Taylor Swift, joking that he tried to push Travis Kelce out of the frame. The prince made the comments during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
In 2024, Prince William attended Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in London with his children, Princess Charlotte and Prince George. The royals took a selfie with Swift and her partner, Travis Kelce. At the time, the couple had not posted a picture of themselves to Instagram, and Swift's post with Travis and the royals marked the couple going “Instagram official.”
A Joke About the Selfie
While on Norton's show, the prince jokingly revealed that he attempted to nudge the NFL star out of the photo to keep their relationship under wraps. Norton asked the prince if he was aware of the significance of the backstage selfie.
Swift and Kelce are now married but they began dating in summer 2023. The prince said he was clueless at the time before making a joke about Kelce.
He said: “I wasn’t until recently. I hadn’t appreciated the significance — and actually, I was trying to move him out of the photo. But Travis kept coming back in, and I couldn’t work out why he kept coming back in,” he continued to joke. “I was trying to move him out so it was just me and Taylor and the children.”
Social Media Posts and Past Encounters
Posting to Instagram for Prince William's birthday, Swift wrote: “Happy Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start🤝.” Another photograph of the backstage moment between Swift and the royals, without Kelce, was shared on the Prince and Princess of Wales' official Instagram account. The caption read: “Thank you @taylorswift for a great evening! #LondonTSTheErastour.”
This was not the first time Prince William met Swift. In 2013, William joined Swift and Jon Bon Jovi on stage at a charity gala at Kensington Palace, where they performed “Livin' on a Prayer” in front of guests.
Podcast Appearance
The prince has also made a surprise appearance on Kelce's podcast “New Heights.” Kelce later joked on the podcast about whether he was supposed to bow or curtsy when meeting the royals, calling the moment a little surreal and praising the royals as “an absolute delight.”
