Princess Beatrice celebrated her 38th birthday on Saturday with a low-key gathering, according to a royal insider, after a year of intense scrutiny on her family.
The eldest daughter of the Duke of York and Sarah Ferguson has stepped back from the spotlight following revelations about her parents' associations with Jeffrey Epstein. Despite previously supporting causes like dyslexia charities, she has kept a low profile as the York family faces ongoing criticism.
A Quiet Celebration
A royal insider told The Sun: "Don’t expect any big celebrations. It is going to be a remarkably low-key, almost gloomy birthday this year. In the past, Beatrice loved a grand celebration. She was the life and soul of the party. But how can you celebrate when your family name is dragged through the mud on a daily basis?"
The insider added: "She has been deeply distressed at times. There will be no fanfare, just a small gathering including her devoted husband Edoardo and the children. It’s a deeply sad state of affairs."
Her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, posted a carousel of photographs on social media, paying tribute to his "phenomenal, beautiful wife".
Family Challenges
Andrew Lownie, author of Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, commented on the family's situation: "Much has changed for the York family since Beatrice’s last birthday. Her father remains under, in effect, house arrest in Norfolk with the possibility of being charged with sharing confidential information, her mother probably still in hiding abroad."
He also noted the release of damning material from Jeffrey Epstein's papers, the de-princing of her father, his eviction from Royal Lodge, and questions over the daughters' subsidised accommodation.
Recent Family Events
Beatrice and Eugenie did not attend Royal Ascot in June but joined the Royal Family at the wedding of their cousin, Peter Phillips, to Harriet Sperling in the Cotswolds on June 6.
Last week, Princess Eugenie welcomed her third baby, a daughter, at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. The baby's name has not been announced, but Sarah Ferguson reportedly traveled to Portugal to meet her newest grandchild.
