Prince Louis attends first major sporting event

The Prince and Princess of Wales took their seats in a packed Hydro arena on Saturday with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis for the Netball semi-final between Australia and Jamaica at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The appearance marked a milestone for eight-year-old Louis, who was attending his first major sporting event. Kensington Palace had announced earlier that William and Catherine - known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland - would be present for the penultimate day of the Games, but the children's attendance had not been disclosed in advance.

A family first at the Hydro

Louis, known for his playful antics and unfiltered facial expressions, regularly attends set-piece royal events such as Christmas and Easter church services and Trooping the Colour. However, his only previous public engagement was in May 2023, when he joined his parents and siblings at a Big Help Out volunteering initiative during the King's Coronation celebrations.

His appearance at the Commonwealth Games also marks the first time he has attended a major sporting fixture. Unlike his older siblings, who frequently join their parents at key football and tennis matches such as the Euros and Wimbledon, Louis had yet to join them.

The young royal looked delighted as he took his seat inside the 5,000-seater venue for the second semi-final of the Women's Netball. The family of five were warmly welcomed inside the arena, where they watched a tense match between the world's No. 1 team Australia and Birmingham 2022 silver medallists Jamaica.

Royal support across the Games

Later on Saturday, William and Catherine are set to spend time with Team Wales athletes and their families. Over the nine days of action so far, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal have also attended several days of the sporting events.

William and Catherine previously visited the Commonwealth Games the last time they were held in Glasgow in 2014, accompanied by the Prince's younger brother, Prince Harry.
