Matt Baker on 22-Year Marriage: 'We're a Great Partnership'

Matt Baker has shared what has kept his marriage to wife Nicola Mooney strong for 22 years, describing their relationship as a "great partnership" where they complement each other's strengths and weaknesses.

The Countryfile presenter, who has been married to Nicola for over two decades and shares two children, Molly and Luke, spoke openly about their dynamic in a new interview.

Yin and Yang Partnership

"We're a great partnership," he told Bella Magazine. "Everything Nicola's good at, I'm rubbish at, and the things I'm rubbish at, Nicola sometimes needs help with."

"In that respect, we're very yin and yang and she's incredibly supportive with my dyslexia and ADHD," he added.

Matt went on to praise his wife's practical skills, saying: "She's brilliant - I couldn't do everything that I do without her. She's a brilliant mum. With the barn conversion, she's so practical, she's a great labourer!"

Life on the Farm

The couple have recently featured in the Channel 4 series Matt Baker: Our Barn in the Dales, which follows them as they convert an old barn, stable and granary on the family farm into their own home.

The project marked a "next phase" for the couple, with their children having left home. At the start of the first episode, Matt reflected on his connection to the farm in the Durham Dales, saying: "I am never happier than when I'm here."

"This is your happy place," Nicola replied, to which Matt added: "Yeah, I feel really kind of privileged to have grown up here. I've been all over the world, the stuff I've done with my job, but I just keep getting pulled back."

He continued: "This place has been a massive part of my life. My mum and dad bought our farm when I was a lad, and completely renovated the farmhouse into our family home. Over the years, we've transformed the 100 acres of barren land into an organic sheep farm, and today it's teeming with wildlife. For me, having a practical upbringing of farming and building was a brilliant way to grow up."

Dancing at Home

Matt, who spent years as a gymnast and lives with ADHD, also revealed that he enjoys dancing at home, drawing on moves learned during his time on Strictly Come Dancing.

"I do enjoy dancing and have a little boogie now and again around the kitchen," he shared. "I just do a quick Samba around the kitchen. I whisk Nicola off her feet!"

The Countryfile Ramble for BBC Children in Need 2026 airs Sunday at 5.25pm on BBC One.
