Prince Harry was mobbed by nurses and medical staff during a visit to Birmingham Children's Hospital on Tuesday, where he praised the work of the WellChild charity and acknowledged the financial pressures facing the NHS.
Royal Visit Marks WellChild Anniversary
The Duke of Sussex, who is patron of WellChild, toured the hospital to celebrate 20 years of the charity's specialist nursing programme. The initiative helps seriously ill children and their families transition from hospital to home care by training parents in essential medical skills.
Harry's appearance caused excitement in the hospital corridors, with nurses and other staff surrounding him. One female medic received a hug, and families asked for photos. The duke posed for a group shot with around a dozen nurses, telling them: "Thank you for everything you do."
Meeting Patients and Sharing Personal Stories
During the visit, Harry met young patients including Alec Hill, 12, and his parents. In a light-hearted moment, the duke revealed his son Archie's love of Lego, saying: "Do you know who's obsessed with Lego? My son Archie – and he's a master builder." Harry is rumoured to be planning to bring his children to see their grandfather, King Charles, later this week.
Harry also met Wyatt Makwana, 12, and other families supported by WellChild. The charity facilitates early discharge from hospital by equipping parents with the skills to provide complex care at home.
Praise for NHS Staff Amid Financial Challenges
Speaking to a room of WellChild executives, nurses, and families, Harry said: "I don't know if you hear it enough, the difference that you make every single day is quite literally changing daily lives." He added: "I understand, and we understand, that becomes harder every week with cuts and financial difficulties… just the insanity that seems to be circulating, not just in this country but in general."
He concluded: "But hospitals like this don't run without people like you, and families like this can't be the families that they want to be at home without the expertise and the skill set that you're handing over to them, and WellChild is right at the centre of that."
The visit highlighted the ongoing challenges facing the NHS, with Harry acknowledging the strain on healthcare workers and the vital role of charities like WellChild in supporting families.
