Meghan Markle's Australian Retreat Encounters Multiple Setbacks
The inaugural 'Her Best Life Retreat' in Sydney, featuring Meghan Markle as the star guest, has encountered further complications. It has been revealed that the hotel's pool and spa facilities are incomplete, while the adjacent beach has been plagued by effluent pollution for the past two years.
Event Details and VIP Access
A spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex has confirmed her participation in the three-day luxury retreat, scheduled from April 17 to 19, during her visit to Australia with Prince Harry. The event, dubbed 'Meg-stock', is an all-women gathering expecting up to 300 attendees. VIP ticket holders, paying £1,700 each, will receive front-row seating and an opportunity for a group photograph with the former actress.
Construction Delays at InterContinental Hotel
The 5-star InterContinental Hotel in eastern Sydney, which promises guests a relaxed poolside experience overlooking Coogee Beach, is currently undergoing refurbishment. The new infinity pool facing the Tasman Sea, along with the spa, bar, and leisure deck, are still under construction and slated for completion next month. A recent guest described the pool area as a work in progress, noting it as a blot on the view.
Beach Pollution Concerns
Coogee Beach, located below the hotel, has been affected by foul-smelling balls washing ashore since 2024. Academic testing has identified these as composed of chemicals, soap scum, cooking oil, hair, and human excrement, likely originating from a fatberg in local sewers. This issue has raised concerns for attendees hoping to enjoy the beach during the retreat.
Accommodation and Financial Troubles
The event's organisation has faced additional challenges, including accommodation arrangements where £1,705 tickets are sold on a twin-share basis, potentially requiring solo travellers to room with strangers. Furthermore, the event organiser, Gemma O'Neill, has encountered financial difficulties, with her talent agency collapsing owing over $500,000, primarily to the Australian Taxation Office.
Historical Context and Comparisons
Royal fans have drawn comparisons between this retreat and the failed Fyre Festival, highlighting promises of luxury that may not materialise. The event's troubles began with reports of the organiser's agency insolvency and have been compounded by the unfinished hotel amenities and ongoing beach pollution.
Despite these setbacks, the Duchess of Sussex's appearance remains confirmed, with the retreat marketed as a unique girls' weekend experience. The hotel and organisers have been approached for comments regarding the completion timeline and accommodation policies.
