Meghan Markle's UK return: A spectacular U-turn after royal exit

Meghan Markle is reportedly preparing to return to Britain, more than six years after she and Prince Harry left the country and publicly criticised royal life. The Duchess of Sussex, who previously spoke of being “silenced”, surrendering her passport and keys, and accused “The Firm” of “perpetuating falsehoods”, is now said to be establishing a new base outside London.

A change of heart on British schooling

The reported move includes Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, with the children even enrolled at a British school. This marks a notable reversal from Meghan’s 2022 comments to The Cut, where she described her belief that she would “never be able to do school pick-up and drop-off without it being a royal photo call with a press pen of 40 people snapping pictures”.

At the time, she added: “Sorry, I have a problem with that. That doesn’t make me obsessed with privacy. That makes me a strong and good parent protecting my child.”

From Oprah to Netflix: A history of criticism

The school-run remarks add to a broader pattern of criticism. In the Oprah interview, Meghan claimed she had been “silenced”, surrendered her passport, driving licence and keys, and accused “The Firm” of playing an active role in “perpetuating falsehoods about us”.

On Netflix, royal life was branded a “baptism by fire”, Palace formality became a source of discomfort, and Meghan revealed she had resorted to Googling the National Anthem because, according to her account, nobody had properly taught her.

Keeping properties and gaining proximity

The Sussexes are expected to keep their Montecito mansion and their Portuguese property, while reportedly establishing another base outside London. Britain offers proximity to the Royal Family that neither Montecito nor Portugal can provide.

Harry has made solo trips home in recent years while Meghan largely remained in America. Putting the entire Sussex family back in Britain changes the equation, making royal reunions possible and bringing every Sussex appearance back into the Palace orbit.
