Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's return to the UK has been described as "utterly farcical," with their latest decisions potentially affecting the taxpayer. The comments come from Daily Express Associate Editor James Walker following reports that the Sussexes have reportedly changed their children's school just days into the new term.
School change after two days
Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are thought to have started at their new school last week. But after just two days with their new teachers and classmates, their parents are said to have decided to withdraw them. Sources close to the Sussexes have stressed there was no problem with the school itself. Instead, the issue was reportedly the practicalities of getting the children there and back.
Harry and Meghan's security arrangements are now also set to be reviewed following their return to the UK. The Royal and VIP Executive Committee, known as RAVEC, oversees tax-funded security for royalty and other public figures. The committee met last week to discuss the Sussexes' case after they and their children became full-time UK residents rather than visitors.
First risk assessment since 2020
It will be the first risk assessment for Meghan since the couple stepped back as working members of the Royal Family in 2020. Harry was granted a review of his security in July but has yet to receive a decision.
Speaking on the Daily Expresso podcast, Walker commented on the latest developments. He said: "They've upped sticks in America like that [snaps] when Archie and Lilibet got their school places. I don't think any of this has been considered at all."
Security costs "a complete scandal"
Walker said the decisions appeared rushed and could have serious consequences. He added: "They've clearly not thought any of this through, it's all been very last-minute, all very slap-dash, and look at the consequences. They are pulling their kids out of a school two days into term.
"It's farcical. It's utterly farcical. And the real scandal is this: we're going to be paying for their protection now. They've now said they're going to review their public protection."
The public could ultimately have to "cough up" for the Duke and Duchess' security bills if RAVEC decides to change their public security status, Walker said, adding: "I think it's a complete scandal, to be honest."
