King Charles has been reunited with his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet for the first time in four years, following a visit by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to his Highgrove residence. The meeting took place during the afternoon, ending days of speculation about whether the family reunion would occur.
Details of the Reunion
Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, last saw their grandfather in person during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. The Queen, who has a private home near the King’s Gloucestershire property, was also reportedly among the group. The meeting between Charles and the young prince and princess is seen as a sign of a potential thaw in the strained relationship between the King and his son Harry.
Background of Estrangement
The King and Harry had been estranged for some time, particularly after Harry criticized his father, stepmother Camilla, brother the Prince of Wales, and sister-in-law Kate in his Oprah interview, Netflix documentary, and autobiography Spare. This followed his decision to step down from the working monarchy six years ago. His rift with William remains ongoing, with no signs of abatement. The family reunion occurred on the same afternoon William was playing in a charity polo match at Windsor.
Steps Toward Reconciliation
In February 2024, Harry made a transatlantic dash from his California home to Britain to see his father following the King’s cancer diagnosis, which may have initiated the first steps toward reconciliation. Harry had planned to bring his family to the UK for a week-long series of events promoting charities, including the Invictus Games. Security issues initially prevented Meghan and the children from traveling with him on Monday, but concerns were mitigated to allow the Highgrove visit.
Recent Events for Harry
The duke has had an eventful week. On Tuesday, he lost his High Court claim, made with a group of celebrities, against the Daily Mail’s publishers over alleged unlawful information gathering. He was also mobbed by nurses as he walked through Birmingham Children’s Hospital to celebrate the 20th anniversary of a specialist nursing program funded by WellChild, and he spoke about the “financial difficulties” facing the NHS. He launched the one-year countdown for his Invictus Games in Birmingham on Friday, participating in exhibition matches including wheelchair rugby.
Ongoing Security Concerns
Harry has faced a protracted legal battle with the Home Office over security arrangements for him and his family in the UK, after his level of protection changed when he stepped down as a working royal in 2020. The duke had been waiting for a review by the Risk Management Board, part of the process by which the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures rules on his security requirements, but found out last Friday that this has yet to take place. The Sussex family are not eligible for taxpayer-funded protection in the UK, except within royal residences, so it remains to be seen if visits by Archie and Lilibet to see their grandfather will become common.
