DJ Carl Cox has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours list, recognising his four-decade career at the forefront of UK club culture. The 63-year-old, known for his long-running Essential Mix series on BBC Radio 1, said he was “absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured” by the recognition.
Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi received an MBE for services to music and charity, while Catatonia singer Cerys Matthews was made an OBE. Iommi described music as his life and thanked fans for their support, adding that helping raise money for charities close to his heart “has meant the world to me”.
Other DJs honoured include Judge Jules, who received an MBE. The annual list also features actress Helen Mirren, who becomes a Companion of Honour, children’s authors Julia Donaldson and Malorie Blackman, and Aardman Animations founders Peter Lord and David Sproxton.
