King Charles and Queen Camilla are planning a state visit to Spain in 2027, marking the first official UK visit to the country since 1988, according to Hello! magazine. The dates of the visit have not yet been confirmed.
Historic visit
The last UK state visit to Spain took place in 1988, when the late Queen Elizabeth was welcomed by former King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, accompanied by Prince Philip. Charles and Camilla are expected to be welcomed by the current Spanish monarchs, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
It is not yet known if they will meet the Spanish heiress, Princess Leonor, 20, or her sister, Infanta Sofia.
Previous engagements
Earlier this year, King Charles hosted Nigeria in the UK in March and made a state visit to the US in April. The US visit was hailed as a success by both sides, with a senior Palace aide noting that the King “grasped in both hands” the “risk and challenge” of the trip. His address to Congress was described as a “high-stakes” moment and part of his sternest diplomatic test to date.
The last time Charles saw the Spanish royals was in 2023, when Felipe and Letizia attended his coronation and a reception at Buckingham Palace for overseas guests.
