Anna Dawson, best known for her role as Violet in the classic British sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 88. Her death comes just six months after the loss of her husband, John Boulter, a soloist in the Black and White Minstrel Show.
Peaceful Passing in New Zealand
Her church, Christ Church Anglican at Kororāreka Russell in New Zealand, announced the news. The statement read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of a much treasured member of our faith community, former actress Anna Boulter (nee Dawson).” They confirmed she “died peacefully” on Saturday, June 27, 2026, in Kerikeri at 3pm.
“Many from the Russell community will remember Anna and her late husband John Boulter who lived in Okiato and Tapeka,” the post added. “Funeral details to follow.”
Remembering Violet from Keeping Up Appearances
In the 1990s sitcom, Dawson played Violet, the sister of the famously snobbish Hyacinth Bucket, portrayed by the late Patricia Routledge, who died last year. Violet was known for her wealthy husband Bruce and her on-screen appearances that often left Hyacinth exasperated.
Tributes from Friends and Colleagues
Tributes have been posted on social media, including from Carol, the widow of Only Fools and Horses star John Challis. She wrote: “Sad news. An old friend. God bless you, Anna.”
Dawson’s death follows a series of losses among beloved British TV actors, including a Coronation Street and Harry Potter actor whose death also prompted an outpouring of tributes.
