Wedding expert Zoe Burke, head of brand at Bridebook, says the ideal number of bridesmaids is four, mainly for 'symmetry.' This allows for two on each side during the ceremony. But it's not just about numbers; each bridesmaid should have a specific role.
The Four Essential Roles
First, you need a type A bridesmaid who remains calm under pressure and can take control when needed. They should be excellent at sticking to plans and might even tidy the honeymoon suite or collect cards and gifts. 'Bonus points if this person is also really tidy, and will tidy up the honeymoon suite for you before you return to it at the end of the night, as well as collecting all the cards and gifts on the way out, and can keep track of who is yet to sign the guest book,' Zoe suggests.
Second, a bridesmaid with a mothering instinct is essential. 'They have plasters, tissues and paracetamol on them at all times. They know where the wet wipes are kept, and they've probably got an emotional support water bottle,' Zoe says. They provide hydration and nutrition when needed and hover like a helicopter parent.
Third, the glam queen notices every detail, from lip gloss wearing off to a bouquet looking peaky. 'They have blotting paper and your wedding lip colour tucked into their bra, and this is someone who knows how important it is for you to keep looking your very best,' Zoe shares.
Finally, the forever friend is someone you've known for a long time, with whom boundaries don't exist. 'They'll get under your dress to make sure it's sitting right, and reach into your corset to help you adjust it,' Zoe explains. They'll help with bathroom trips and outfit changes without batting an eye.
If You Need a Fifth
If you must have a fifth bridesmaid, Zoe says it should be a party starter. 'They'll break the ice when you merge different friendship groups together, and be just as comfortable chatting to Great Aunt Doris as they'll be calming down a nervous flower girl before she sets off,' Zoe says.
