Prince Harry's Dating Rule Thrown Out for Meghan Markle
In his revealing memoir Spare, Prince Harry admits to having maintained a firm personal guideline regarding relationships, only to discard it entirely upon meeting Meghan Markle. The Duke of Sussex details how his life transformed dramatically a decade ago, when he was a full-time working royal residing in Kensington Palace near his brother Prince William.
The Strict Rule Abandoned
Prince Harry writes that he had established "firm rules" for dating, particularly as a member of the royal family. The primary rule was that one must date a partner for at least three years before considering marriage. However, this principle was quickly abandoned when he began courting Meghan Markle in the summer of 2016.
Harry explains that Meghan represented an exception to all rules, stating he knew she was the one he would marry early in their romance. Following a trip to Africa, he realised that traditional guidelines no longer applied. In Spare, he reflects: "But Meg seemed the shining exception to this rule. All rules. I knew her straightaway, and she knew me. The true me."
Rapid Progression to Marriage
Contrary to his self-imposed three-year dating period, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in a fairytale Windsor wedding in 2018, just two years after they first met. This swift progression marked a significant departure from Harry's previous relationship philosophy as a young bachelor.
The couple's union led to further life changes, including their decision to step back from royal duties in 2020. They now reside in California with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, having established a new life away from the UK monarchy.
Current Family Dynamics and Reconciliation Hopes
Despite years of estrangement from the royal family, Prince Harry has expressed openness to reconnecting. A friend close to Harry revealed that he would welcome an invitation to Sandringham to spend summer with the Royal Family at King Charles III's Norfolk estate.
The Duke of Sussex is scheduled to be in the UK in July for an event related to the Invictus Games in Birmingham. His friend noted that this presents a potential opportunity for family reunification, suggesting that Harry would appreciate an official invitation from the King, which would include automatic security provisions.
However, sources close to King Charles III indicate that "low trust and bitter experience" regarding perceived leaks by Harry's camp about family matters are hindering full reconciliation. An insider emphasised that private discussions without public disclosures would be crucial for rebuilding trust between father and son.
This complex interplay of personal rules, rapid romance, and ongoing family tensions continues to define Prince Harry's journey from royal insider to independent figure alongside Meghan Markle.
