The Royal Family are tipped to face a tricky “problem” following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the UK. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to Britain last month, six years after leaving the country for a new life in America.
A few days after their arrival, Buckingham Palace issued a letter – the first official public clarification – to Government officials and the military regarding the couple’s official status as non-working royals. The letter was issued by Buckingham Palace’s most senior officer, the lord chamberlain, Richard Benyon. A part of it read: “In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”
Commentator warns of ‘guerrilla warfare’
Now, a royal commentator has weighed in on what the Sussexes’ return really means for the Royal Family. Veteran royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told the Daily Express: “Harry’s royal standing may very well be affected by his and Meghan’s decision to come back to Britain, blindsiding the King and the Royal Family.
“Already there has been trouble, the ‘surprise’ the Sussexes have expressed over the letter sent out by the Palace about their status and their preference to be public figures rather than private citizens. These are harbingers of trouble to come.”
Mr Fitzwilliams added: “The problem is, the royals have to stick to the script. The Sussexes can conduct guerrilla warfare, overshadowing royal events in the coming months.”
Meghan’s close pal shares insight
It comes just as Meghan’s BFF provided an insight into the couple’s first few weeks in the UK. The duchess’s close pal from the US, Kelly McKee Zajfen, shared a new set of photographs from her trip to the UK to see her friend. Her post included photographs of the duke and duchess.
But they also included a sweet snap of Lilibet with Meghan’s pal. Kelly has known Meghan for many years, and they’ve followed each other through many of the biggest moments of their lives. She founded the Alliance of Mom charity when her nine-year-old son Georgie died after contracting a viral illness in 2022.
In her latest message on social media, Kelly wrote: “UK, you’ve been so good to us. We’re leaving with full hearts and definitely leaving a piece of ourselves here. To everyone we’ve met or bumped into, thank you for being so loving to my friend. It’s been beautiful to witness. She missed you, too!”
